Task initiation

Starting difficulty needs less friction, not a longer list

Task initiation is the shift from intending to do something into actually beginning. When that shift is hard, find the kind of friction in front of you and lower only that.

Quick check

Which start-up problem is here?

  1. Choice friction: too many things seem important.
  2. Clarity friction: you cannot see a useful entry point.
  3. Setup friction: something you need is not ready.
  4. Time friction: the task feels endless or too large for now.

Match the tool to the friction

Why motivation may not arrive first

Waiting to feel fully ready can leave the task open and undefined. A small amount of action can create information that planning cannot. Once the document is open or the workspace is ready, the next useful move may be easier to see.

This does not mean every task should be reduced to a microscopic instruction. Use enough detail to enter the work, then return to the broader goal.

Externalize what your brain is holding

A timer, a visible restart cue and a place to park distractions can carry information outside working memory. Keep these supports small. If maintaining the system takes more effort than the work, remove steps.

Before the block: Work broadly on the client response.

During the block: Park the unrelated thought instead of switching tasks.

Before the break: Leave one sentence that says where to resume.

Use neutral feedback

A missed block is information, not a character judgment. Try a shorter block, change the environment, or choose a different useful area. Avoid turning streaks and overdue warnings into more friction.

Lower one barrier

Quiet Next starts broad and only adds detail when you ask.

The app recommends one timely practice, carries the timer, and offers a smaller entry point if you are still stuck.

Sources and limits

Task-initiation difficulty can have more than one cause and is not unique to ADHD. Persistent or severe difficulties deserve individualized assessment from a qualified professional.
