ADHD body doubling

Body doubling should feel like company, not supervision

Body doubling means doing your own task while another person is present, in the room or remotely. Their presence can act as a gentle external anchor. They do not need to manage you, watch your screen or work on the same thing.

Simple setup

Run one low-pressure session

  1. Say what broad area you will work on. A detailed task list is optional.
  2. Choose a shared focus time, such as 20 or 25 minutes.
  3. Work quietly, then check in when the timer ends. Progress is enough.

What the other person actually does

A useful body double is present and predictable. They might work on their own project, read nearby or stay on a quiet video call. The shared start time and visible presence can reduce the feeling that you must create momentum alone.

They are not a monitor. Unless you ask, they do not need to give advice, check your output or decide what you should do next.

Choose the lightest version that helps

SetupGood when
Same roomA friend, partner or coworker can quietly do their own work nearby.
Video or audio callYou want a clear shared start and finish without traveling.
Library or cafeThe general presence of working people is enough and direct interaction would distract you.
Text check-inLive company feels heavy, but sending “starting” and “done” creates a useful boundary.
Quiet on-screen promptNo person is available and you only need a visible accountability cue.

Agree on the rules before starting

Keep the agreement short: what time you begin, how long you will work, whether talking is welcome, and what happens at the end. If cameras, conversation or frequent check-ins increase distraction, turn them off.

Start: “I am moving the listing project forward for 25 minutes.”

During: Quiet work. Unrelated thoughts go into a parking lot.

End: “I made progress and left a restart note.”

Know when it is not a fit

Body doubling is optional. Some people focus better alone, and the wrong person or setting can create more pressure. Stop or change the format if you feel watched, ashamed, interrupted or responsible for entertaining the other person.

Evidence for body doubling itself remains limited. It is best treated as a practical experiment, not a treatment claim. Notice whether it makes starting or staying easier for you.

Quiet company

Quiet Next includes an optional body-doubling mode.

Start a focus block, turn on the quiet accountability message, and use the visible timer as a gentle external anchor.

Sources and limits

Body doubling is a practical strategy used by some people, but it is not established as a clinical treatment and may not help everyone.
